Urbanization seems to be unavoidable and this development brings many challenges. During this course we have learned, what problems there are and what solutions have been implemented to hinder those problems. The final lecture was kept by Risto Laukkanen from Pöyry. He emphasized the importance of learning and considering all the possible alternatives. Right now the direction where this world is going to does not seem to be the right one, but we and the coming generation have opportunity to impact on it and will be encouraged to meet the challenges. The Climate Change Conference ended last weekend in Cancun, Mexico. Any significant progress was not made during this time either. The conference tried to normalize the faith for UN and the negotiation connections between countries. The conference confirmed once again how political these problems really are and how different viewpoints countries have.
People’s opinion impact politics so the demand for changes has to come from the bottom to up, because legislation drives the development. People are today much more aware because the rapid development of communication technology. Ideas can be quite openly shared via Internet for example in Facebook and Twitter which are popular tools for communication. Education has also changed during years and today already at primary school children are taught basics about sustainable development.
Rapid development and economic rise in China, India and other Asian countries is something that western countries are trying to benefit. Industry is moving to the east and R&D is going after. In this way we are also moving some of our problems there like the emission heavy industry, and after that we can be proud how our CO2 emissions have been declined. What will be the role of Europe in the future? Where the technological solutions that the world is going to need will be invented?
Business just to make more and more money does not work anymore. It has to be sustainable to succeed, and pay attention to environmental, economical and social risks and opportunities. All the actions made today have to be considered carefully and predefined the impacts. Laukkanen motivated us to study things that we like and interdisciplinary. Engineers graduating in the future will be more readiness to solve challenges. New technology and jobs in the new industries, which does not yet exist, require that. We have to be ready and we have to be fast.
I’m sure this course has give me and the fellow students wider understanding about the development we are facing today. I believe many of us will find our career in some way related to these things, it is avoidable. I’m already waiting for the studio course starting next year, where we have opportunity to challenge our skills in practice. Then the real engineer skills will be tested…
